During The Disaster: If You Are Outside Or In The Car

Home Tips > Tips By Category > Tips you can implement daily

If tornadoes are spotted, leave the car, find a ditch or low area, and lie down flat in the depression. Your chances are better if you are not ground-level.

Stay away from trees and other objects that can topple over.

Stay off hilltops or ridges.

If there is a severe lighting storm, stay away from trees and other tall objects that serve to attract lightning.

If you are in your car, stay there. Pull off the road if necessary and wait in the car for the storm to pass.

Do not touch anything if lighting is occurring. lf you must cross a  metal fence, do so as quickly as possible. Go under the fence if you can.

If you are in a heavily wooded area, stay off ridges and avoid power lines or stream beds.

Take shelter in thickets or low-growing bushes rather than among taller trees.

Be alert for frightened animals.

If you are in an urban area, go inside a building. If an open building cannot be located, find a parking lot and remain there until it is safe to travel again.

If you are in a school building or large office complex, seek a restroom and take refuge inside a stall. If you are in a classroom, lie flat on the floor and stay away from windows and doors. If possible, take shelter under tables or desks.

Try to stay near other people. If you should be injured or pinned down by fallen timbers, you will need  help.
