Turn off all media.

Tell your child that there have been many pictures on TV about current disaster and those pictures have been hard for many people to see.

Ask your child what pictures are still in his/her mind.

(If you have a young child, you may ask your child to draw a picture.  This will help you understanding how they view the disaster images.)

Ask your child what feelings people have who go through a time like this.  (Validate all feelings)

Ask your child what feelings people have who are watching these images. (Validate all feelings)

Ask your child what people or children worry about when they see these overwhelming images.

Reassure your child.  Talk about safety, what has been learned.

Allow your child to participate in a small way to help those affected.  You may make a trip with a small donation to the Red Cross.

Taking action helps children to feel more in control and more capable of handling tough times.

If your family has relatives/friends affected by the disaster, please let someone at school know.

If your family has been through any other difficult time recently, you may notice increased anger or sadness in your child.  Let your child's teacher and counselor/school psychologist know if your child needs support.
