The Necessities Required At Home For A Disaster

Non-perishable food, including canned fruits, ready-to-eat snacks foods or trail mixes, canned vegetables, dried foods that are protected from exposure, and other emergency rations. Packages of cookies, potato chips, and similar foods. Dry milk, cereals, nuts, and dehydrated items such as raisins or prunes.

  • Fresh water.

  • Extra medicines, if anyone is under the a doctor's care.

  • Well-supplied first-aid kit.

  • Several flashlights with spare batteries.

  • Battery-operated, weather-band radio equipped with commercial-channel reception.

  • Tools for cutting, such as ax, bow saw, small cross-cut saw.

  • Sleepwear: Sweat suits are excellent, they can be worn day or night, in bed, or out. Extra clothing, particularly underwear, socks, and shoes.

  • Weapons and ammunition: Natural disasters sometimes cause animals, domestic or wild, to react out of fear or hysteria, and they sometimes attack humans beings. Snakes are prone to migrate in mass under stressful condition. Even other people can become threatening.

  • Address, emergency telephone numbers, or lists of names and numbers of officials or agencies that should be notified in time of emergency.

  • Rainwear and cold-weather wear, if appropriate.

  • Fire extinguisher.

  • Medical IDs for family members with health problems.

  • Small amounts of fuel (in safe containers) for vehicles or other gas-powered vehicles or equipments.

  • Money, including coins for food and motel expenses, until shelters are made available.

  • Extra keys for the house, vehicles, and outbuildings.

  • A checkbook or several loose checks for emergency use.

  • A credit card, in case stores will not accept checks.

  • A length of rope or cord or chains.

  • Canned pet food, if you have pets.

  • Several can openers.

  • Plastic or paper dishes, cups, utensils.

  • Camp stove, for heat and food preparation if there is no danger of ruptured fuel lines, etc.

  • Work gloves, for warmth and protection against cuts, scrapes, and insect or rodent bites.

  • Whistles for all family members old enough to use them.

  • A knife for older family members.

  • Insulated wire cutters, in the event live electrical wires are blocking escape routes.

  • Chain saw, in case timbers must be cut or drive way must be cleared  of fallen trees.

  • Folding lounge chairs, to keep ill or injured persons off of damp or cold floors.

  • Medical emergency book.

  • Comfort kits, including soap, towels, sanitary pads, and other items of personal hygiene and comfort.

  • Matches or lighters.

  • Candles or lanterns.

  • Kindling, for use in starting emergency fires as signals or for warmth and cooking.

  • Chamber pot or large bucket with lid for bathroom use.

  • Toilet tissue.

  • Note pads for recording information received via radio or contact with outside persons.

  • A strong table, to take refuge under in case of tornado, hurricane, or high winds that could collapse house.

  • Pillows for sleeping and for head protection in case of falling timbers.

  • Inflatable mattresses and bicycle pump, for inflating.

  • Metal cans filled with sand, to be used as emergency cook stove or heating.

  • Toys and books for younger family members, in the event the stay in the shelter is prolonged.

  • Short ladder, if there is danger of entrapment in the basement due to a blocked or destroyed stairway.

  • Supply of pencils or ballpoint pens.

  • Prying tools, such as crowbars or wrecking bars.

  • Large sections of plastic, to use as a tarpaulin or tent shelter in case you are exposed to rainfall, snow or sleet.

  • Any necessary personal items.
