Home Tips > Useful > During The Disaster: At Your Shelter During The Disaster When conditions are right for severe storm, turn on the radio or television set for weather bulletins. Write down the locations of storm centers and pay attention to the direction the storms are moving.
Get the family together and to the shelter as soon as you notice signs of a severe weather problem.
Locate flashlights and extra batteries, and keep at least one light either in your hand or pocket.
Advise younger children about what to expect. Try to stay calm and urge others to do the same.
Stay away from open doors, windows, or drafts. Avoid contact with any electrical or metal objects.
Assemble gear you expect to need during the coming hours. Get the entire family in the safest area of the home, such as closet, hallway, bathroom, pantry, or other small enclosure that will offer maximum protection.
Grab pillows and blankets, if time permits.
During the greatest intensity of the storm, maintain close physical, visual, or voice contact with family members.
Listen to the radio to keep up with the progress of the storm and its direction.
Stay in the shelter until you are certain it is safe to leave. If you smell smoke, leave the house as soon as you can. Noxious fumes can kill faster than fire, and super-heated air is equally fatal.
