Picnic baskets - Can't have enough. Use one for the food and the other for dishware, glasses and other utensils.
Wooden cutting boards come in handy if you are serving anything that will have to be sliced or prepared while you're outside.
Thermal flasks and glassware are essential. New thermal flasks are great, but it's also worth keeping an eye out for funky vintage thermal flasks at tag sales. Colorful plastic glasses make for nice presentation of iced coffees or teas.
Dishware can be anything your heart desires. Extra-strength paper is great for a big picnic; colorful Melmac is a nice touch. For intimate picnics consider china - just be careful.
Sunglasses, sunscreen and hat.
A tablecloth comes in handy if you plan to use a picnic table. If it's a vintage cloth - or something you really care about - bring an old sheet to use as an under liner. This will protect your favorite cloth from snags.
Folding stools are handy for anyone who wants to get off the ground for a bit. Camp stools are perfect since they can be folded and easily transported.
Simple flowers from home will create a beautiful, impromptu centerpiece.
Wine and beverages - A light Chablis or Chardonnay is a nice wine to sip and enjoy. Iced mint tea and iced coffee are great alternatives. Edible flowers work well as garnishes.
Games, books and puzzles - Sport Equipment (balls, baseball bats and gloves, jump ropes, Frisbees). A picnic is the perfect way to decompress. This is a great time to read that novel or to try your hand at badminton or croquet
Clean-up - Large Trash Bag (for clean up). Don't forget at least one dry and one damp tea towel. Seal them in plastic bags. You will be prepared for any mess that pops up.
Keeping ants away - Insect Repellent. Draw chalk circles around the plates, and if you're eating on the ground, use talcum powder. Ants won't cross either due to the smell and texture, which are repellant to them.
Emergencies - Pack a first-aid kit in your picnic basket and include sunscreen
