Every item you have, no matter what it is, should have a designated home. If an item doesn't have a specific home, it's considered to be 'homeless.' Something that is homeless, tends to get lost.

Use boxes to organize your room. Put clutter - clothes, papers, toys - into them. Stack them against a wall and label each one. Seeing your clutter in boxes instead of on the floor will make you feel better instantly. When you have a few minutes, you can tackle them one at a time.

Use different color post-it notes to create filing systems. Using them helps since you can move the labels around to suit the system formulated.

Create an errands box. In it put books and videos that need to be returned, items to be repaired, dry cleaning, etc. Then, just grab it on your way out the door.

Organize your drawer. Install a drawer organizer to help you keep everything organized, so that the items inside can be retrieved in an instant.

Get yourself a good shoe rack or shoe cubbies. When you look for a shoe rack, avoid those that are slightly slanted. Shoes without heels will not stay put on these types of racks.

Take an extra minute to make your bed and put everything back in its place before you leave for the day. Get the kids in the habit of doing this, too.

Simplify. A cluttered, chaotic environment breeds stress and frustration. If you don't love it and/or you don't use it, it's clutter. Use this season to get rid of your clutter and lighten your load. As you do, you'll be reducing stress and feeling a sense of calm.
